Beyond the Buzz: How the Internet of Things is Silently Changing Our World
A non-technical introduction to the Internet of Things, explaining what it is, how it works, and how it is shaping our future.
Our lives are now being lived on connected devices, and we don't even realise it. The Internet of Things, or IoT, is not just about smart appliances or fitness trackers; it is the infrastructure that connects the world, drives health care progress and supports the global industrial supply chain. A recent in-depth review article published in Sensors (Salih et al., 2022) demonstrates how the Internet of Things (IoT) has entered the world at a rapid pace, connecting tens of billions of devices globally and influencing industry and healthcare today.
The Tech Stack: How It Works
The main features of the IoT ecosystem are based on a multi-layer architecture, with physical sensors, protocols such as LoRaWAN and ZigBee used for network routing, and cloud middleware for big data processing. Some of the key technologies that are contributing to this network are:
· RFID and Microchips: Automate tracking and provide real-time asset visibility in supply chains.
· Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs): Collect environmental, industrial and health data continuously for long periods of time with low power consumption.
· Edge Computing & AI: Processing data on the edge devices to make real-time decisions.
